Are People Still Buying Solar Panels?

Going green is increasingly popular. Despite the state of the economy, people are still buying solar panels – and they’re doing so at a record pace. While economic troubles may make it hard for some people to pay for an expensive installation, there are financing options that allow profitable investments in solar panels to be made with no or little upfront cost.

Of course it’s hard to generalize about what a marketplace full of consumers is thinking, and there will always be exceptions to any general trend.  However, we point to two sources of data when we conclude that interest is still strong in solar panels.  First, the number of applications for rebates is up in California – the number was higher at the end of 2008 than it’s ever been.  Second, the Cone 2009 Consumer Environmental Survey shows that 35% of people have a higher interest in the environment today than they did a year ago – compared to 10% who have a lower interest.  34% of consumers are more likely to buy environmentally responsible products today versus one year ago, compared to 8% who are less likely.
